Rambles and shots…

April 24, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Along with my last post, I am going to change up my blog a little bit.

Going forward, I am going to be a little more selective on what actually makes it to my various galleries on my site.  So the shots that don’t make it to those galleries will end up here.  So instead of simply posting a few pics from each shoot, I will post anywhere from 5 – 20 pictures that I think are good..but not gallery worthy in each of my blog posts about recent shoots.  I am going to start this new format with this post…

A few Friday’s ago, I grabbed my camera and head to the beach to meet my brother…I jumped in the water, which was a huge mistake.  The shorebreak was really inconsistent, and the current was as strong as I have ever seen it…So I hopped out and threw on my 70-200 lens and snapped a few off…

Let me know what you think of the new format in the comments...

Hope you enjoy..

Some tweaks to the my site

April 22, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Next month will be my two year anniversary that SurfingEye Images has been open for print sales and private shoots.  It has been surprisingly successful, and always wonderful to think that people like my photos enough to have them hanging in their homes.  I will post a promotion and contest to celebrate this next month.

With that…I am going to be removing many images from the various galleries on my site.  I am removing images that have never sold to make way for new shots.  With that said, if you did want an image that was removed, I can always call them up easily.

I hope to have the new look site done by May 1.

Here is an example of a few of the images that will be removed:

Before the slow shutter

As I posted last week, I did some shooting at sunset the previous week.  Some of the waves were pretty heavy, but I came away with a couple of nice ones…

I love the light coming through the back of the wave and hitting the lip.

This was one of the bigger waves from this night...I had to ask if this kid was okay.  Such a heavy wave..

More shots will be available in my Recents gallery this week...

Sunset Slow Shutter

April 12, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

From time to time, I like to play around with the slow shutter wave shots..  My favorite time to use this technique is sun rise.  Mostly because you can get some nice yellows and oranges from the sun rise.

However, last week I was in the water at sunset and as the sun begins to dip towards the horizon, the light gets a lot lower, and the shutter has to come down to keep the same apature and focus point.. .

I got a couple that I came away from that I enjoyed.  Nothing really great.. but some fun ones…

I thought this one was kinda cool.  It is a sort of over/under type shot...

One thing I do like the with slow shutter shots is lines that little drops of water makes...

This one was my favorite.  I like the "teeth" that the lip created and that you can still see how glassy it was that night...

Hope you enjoy… Comments are always welcome...

Sunny morning & Clear Waters

April 09, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Last week I took the morning off and did a little wave shooting in La Jolla.  When I got to the beach, it was how it has been for a while, gloomy and overcast.  But the shore-break was good so I got in anyway… To my surprise by the time I got my camera in my housing, wetsuit on and walked down to the beach, the sun had come out.

When the sun came out, I noticed that the water was as clear as I have ever seen it in La Jolla.  I came away with a few gems (so I think).  Here are a few:

Night Shoot

April 03, 2013  •  1 Comment

Over a month ago, I decided to invest in SPL flash housing for my 580exII Canon Flash.  I wanted to start doing some night wave shooting.  I saw that as a great new challenge in my surf / wave photography.  Over the last few months, I have been getting some really good, deep barrel shots and wanted a new way to challenge myself with this type of photography.

Since I got this back in March, I have been able to use it three times.  The first two times, were epic failures.  Both times, the waves were good and thought I could have gotten some really good stuff.  I under-estimated how difficult this photography was.  So before going out last night, I spent some time in my office trying to get my settings (both camera and flash) down before wasting my time again.

So last night after the sun went under, I strapped on the flash housing and made my way back to into the water...While there is still a lot I can do to get better at this, I did finally come away with a few shots that I liked… Let me know what you think of these shots…feel free to shoot me a comment..

Water Therapy

March 27, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

Water photography for me, is not all about what I get from the camera, but more about what the ocean gives back to me.  I went out a couple times this past weekend (Friday night and Saturday morning respectively).  Getting in the water has been tougher and tougher of late with the new family.  Friday night (March 22) was the first time I was able to get in the water since March 3rd.  As soon as I got in though, it reenergized me, calmed me, and brought me back from all the tension and stress that can build on a person.  More proof to that point… I spent 2 hours in the water on Friday night, and didn’t keep a single shot.  Not even for Instagram.  But, I had a blast as always.

Some people go and get a message…..me, I will let the ocean be my therapy.

It was a sharp contrast in the 12 hours that was away from the water though.  Friday night had a great sunset without a cloud in the sky.  Saturday had no sun and clouds for days...

Here are some of the shots that I go from Saturday's session...

Updates to SurfingEye

March 18, 2013  •  Leave a Comment

So I have made a couple of updates to my site that I wanted to let you all know about.

The gallery that has commonly been in the “Featured” section of my website actually has the name of “Recent from SoCal”.  This gallery is where I will normally upload all my shots from my most recent shoots in.  Commonly where surfers go to see if I caught any good ones of them, or just some of my new wave / landscape shots.  This gallery is now located under the “Galleries” section, and still called “Recent from SoCal”.  See below:

As for the “Featured” gallery.  I take many many shots while in the waves.  Some of which I have been holding back, to submit to various places, but just have never really followed through with that.  So, until the day comes when I actually have time to do that, I am going post them here.  Check out some of my previously never before seen images.  I will update this page with new shots when I feel that I have one worth posting in here.

Here are a couple of the never released shots that are now in the Featured gallery:
