As a lot of you know, while surf / wave photography is a great passion of mine... there tends to not be a lot of money involved with it. More so when it is just a hobby. I promised my wife a long time ago, I wouldn’t take my normal salary and pay for anything that related to surf photography.
That’s why I also do portrait / couples shooting. It is something that I have been working on for about a year or so now. I have taken a few classes, read a few books and done a few sessions for free just to get the practice. Here are a few shots from a recent couples session I did with a cute couple of Caleb and Emily.
If you are interested in scheduling a session, please see my Private shoot Info section:

This was one of my favs from this shoot..
As you know, I started a new “Limited Edition” gallery on my site a couple of months ago. This gallery is comprised of five of my most popular images. What makes it “Limited” is that each image only has five prints available. The image will be high quality canvas warps that are both signed and numbered for the customer. That and these images will only be around for a three month period. And once all five are sold or the three months is up, the images will not be available on my site for one year.
We are in our last month of this group of images. Starting in April I will have a new crop of 5 images. So if you really want to get one of these, place your order soon… To read more about the limited edition gallery, check out my previous post:

I have been terrible about getting my site updated the last few months with new shots….Time is always something I am very short on with my little guy.
With that said, my last couple of sessions have yield some pretty epic waves. Check out some of the new shots I just posted on my http://surfingeye.com/recents Gallery. I have even held a couple back to use for my next limited gallery. Here is a sneak peak at some of the new images I posted…
When shooting in the La Jolla, I normally don't need to wear fins. With as cold as the water has been though, I normally wear 3mm dive shoes. This wave was so strong, if I were to have kept clicking under water, you would have seen the wave suck the shoes off my feet and throw me back to shore. This sequence cost me $30. Well worth it!
It was such a clean day, a lot of the waves looked like glass walls.
I have another session to post later this week. So stoked to be lucky enough to catch these waves…
Hope you enjoy!
As you might have noticed, I have not posted nearly as many shots lately and have not been keeping up with my blog…
I promise there have been good reasons for that…Over the last couple of weeks my son has been sick and so taking care of the little guy (who is much better now) has taken priority.
Not only that…but any time I have gotten in the water, the shore break has not wanted to cooperate. So any shots I have gotten have been maybe instgram worthy, but not really great shots.
Here are a few of the okay ones that I have taken in my recent trips to the water..

Gloomy days do sometime produce some sick clouds
My favorite shot I have taken the last two weeks..

As I posted last week, I have been selected to have my own gallery on the popular site The Canvas Wave.com (thecanvaswave.com)
Well, I found out that my gallery is up. Go to: http://www.thecanvaswave.com/collections/ronald-hons and check it out...

Hope you go and get one of these great images on the high quality canvas wraps...
Like a lot of photographers, I separate out my pics from each shoot and will occasionally hold a couple of back that I want to save to either submit to magazines, web sites, or whatever. Well, I have finally figured out what “whatever” actually means.
Starting today, I am opening my “Limited” gallery. This gallery will consist of some of my favorite shots, a few of which have never been seen before..
What does Limited mean?
These shots will only be around for a VERY limited time (3 months).
There will also only be a limited quantity of each image available. I will only sell 5 prints of each image TOTAL. And once the 3 months is up or all 5 prints of an image is sold, that image will not be available for sale again for at least 1 year.
Each images will be printed on archival canvas and are stretched and wrapped around a 1.5" thick wooden frame. The sides have a mirror effect so no part of the image is sacrificed on the front and it looks great from all angles. Every print has a satin varnish to protect it against minor scratches and to provide it with UV protection.
Customers will can choose from the following sizes
16x24 - $139
20x30 - $175
24x36 - $200
Also each image will also be hand signed and numbered.
When The Limited gallery is updated, I will announce it on my blog. Hope you take advantage of this great opportunity.

I have some very exciting news to share with my fans. Starting in a couple of weeks, I will have my own gallery of The Canvas Wave website (www.thecanvasewave.com).
The Canvas Wave is a website that specializes in action sports photography and providing high quality prints and Canvas wraps. A little more about their mission:
"We set our goal to provide amazing action sports photography (surf, ski, snowboard, skateboard, and bike) at affordable prices. Not just the regular photos that you find at the big retailers, but the cream of the crop that you see on the covers of magazines and in their photo annuals."
Some of the great names that also have galleries on The Canvas Wave are couple of the best in the surf photography business in Brent Belmann, Matthew Clark and Jeremiah Klein, as well as one of the great up and comers, Follow the Light finalist Sarah Lee.
Over the next week, I will be working on getting images selected and the gallery up. In the meantime, go and check out their site site and all the great photographers on it. Something I am truly humbled and honored by and can't wait until the gallery is up.
Look for more updates on this in soon.
In the mean time, I have not shared some of the new images I have taken...so here are a few from last weekend... Hope you enjoy!

Playing with shutter speeds at sun up

Morning light is the best

The lines of the lip.
As many of you know, it is no secret that my favorite place to shoot shore break in San Diego is at Windansea Beach in La Jolla. I thought I had seen all that, that beach had to offer as far as shore break. I was wrong!
Let me back up first. I woke up last Saturday morning to do more of the sunrise shooting. I had planned to shoot with Phil Gibbs again up in North County. However, when I got there, right before sunrise, it was flat and washed out. Not good conditions for what I wanted to do. So I jumped in the car and headed back to La Jolla. When I finally got down there, I thought to myself I should have come here first.
Once I got in, there were two things that I noticed right away…
1. The water was as cold as I can ever remember.
2. It was not a normal day of waves. They were Heavy.
I have been shooting the shore break for a little over a year and have gotten pretty good about the position that I need to be in for the shot I want without taking too much of a beating. On Saturday though…I was got tossed like a doll more than I ever have. It felt more like a Wedge wave rather than Windansea. I spent 3 hours in the water getting shots and later that afternoon feeling like I went a couple of rounds with Tyson. It is all in good fun though. When you go back and look at the camera, you can’t help at thinking, I can’t wait to get back in…

On my way back to La Jolla, I had to stop at Swami's to snap this with my iPhone..
You can see how much power was in the waves. The brown part at the bottom of the wave is the sand being sucked up from the ocean floor.
There were a couple of clear glassy ones too...
One of my last waves had a nice backwash flare coming off the lip...
You can see more in the featured section on my website from last weekend as well as the previous weekend.
Hope you enjoy!
With the start of 2013, I made a couple of resolutions to myself regarding my photography.
The first one is to submit more of my work to surf website and magazines.
And the second is to shoot in different locations much more. That means both in and out of the water. With a trip to the North Shore already planned for early next winter, I want to get out of my comfort zone and start shooting in more locations than just Windansea Beach.
While there is nothing wrong with Windansea, it has been spectacular and I will continue to shoot there, I feel that need to get out more. So when my buddy Phil Gibbs (of Phil Gibbs Photography) suggested that we go up north to Carlsbad to do some wave shooting, I jumped at the chance…
The water was cold but the shore break was really good too…Here are a few from New Years day…

Phil Gibbs waiting for the next set

One of the last waves I shot...had a really nice little flare on the lip..
More of these shots will be in the featured section of my site...Hope you enjoy!
