Splish Splash

June 07, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

While everyone was out trying to photograph the "Transit of Venus" on Tuesday night, I was at the beach too.  Not trying to capture Venus (I didn't have the filters for it), but just doing some good old fashion sunset beach shooting.

While I was there, I started playing with capturing the foamy splashes on the rocks of Windansea Beach with a high shutter speed.  I have seen a lot of cool images from a few of my friends, so I thought I would try a couple.

Here are some that I came away with:

Waves for Days

May 31, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Memorial day weekend started off on a little down note for me..I thought it would be a good idea to travel up to Laguna Beach / San Clemente to do some wave shooting.  I got in the car and drove north at 7 am.  The sun was out and I was super stoked.  I couldn't remember the last time I saw the sun up along the coast that early.  However, by the time I got up to my shooting location, the wind kicked up and completely washed the shorebreak out and made the the waves terrible to surf.

Here are a few iPhone pics (which were the only pics that I took while I was up there).

The next couple of days, I just stayed in my normal spot in La Jolla and came away with some really good ones...Here is a couple examples:

We had a showcase event last weekend at Jake's wine bar in Hillcrest where we showed off some of our favorite work. It was a fun little event.

Here is a shot of our display that night:

We also have another event where we will be displaying at on June 9th.  We will have a booth set up for Ray at Night.

Ray at Night is San Diego's largest and longest-running monthly art walks.  It is held on Ray street in North Park and displays works from 15 galleries and other local artists.

Some of the things we will have for sale are:

  • Framed and matted images (like those that are pictured above)
  • Matted prints in protective plastic bags
  • Canvas prints

More details will follow as the date gets closer, but we hope to see you there.

At the street

Contrary to what my friends think, I don't get to go out and shoot nearly as much as I use to.. So when I have the time to get out and shoot, I try to take advantage.

So when I went out this weekend, I had a ton of issues with my port not keeping the water sheen.  For those who don't know what I am talking about, before I get in the water, I have to either lick or spit on the port of my housing.  Then once you get in the water, it creates a clear sheen of water over the port so you have no distortion on your images.

My problem was that port was not holding the sheen.  I had to get out of the water 3 times to try and clean, but it was not helping.  A nice man on the beach told me that I should go and get some dish soap and clean the port.  I ran up to a store in my wetsuit and cleaned the port and it worked...  Thankfully, because the problem was driving me INSANE!!  Here are a few images that I got this weekend...

No way..More gray skies!

May 18, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

When I left my office last night to go shoot at the beach, It was sunny blue skies.  Really stoked because the May gray has been keeping me down...However, my 10 min drive to the beach yielded something very different.  You guessed it..more gray skies.  I got in the water anyway, because I can always use the practice..but here are a few I came away with.

Mistakes and near misses

May 16, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

All water photographers, at one time or another, will tell you that from time to time that they mess up.  Either with setting, focus point, or simply that they had the camera angled incorrectly.  When I was in the water last, my night was full of them...My focus point and settings were off, and I had a shot or two that would have been really nice, but just positioned myself incorrectly...

Most photogs keep their mistake hidden off websites and blogs, but since this is a journey and learning experience for me, I thought I would share it..

I would have loved this shot if I had my focus point correct!

I didn't mind this shot, but the color and focus is a little off

This was the shot that annoyed me the most.  If I would have tilted my camera up just 2 more inches, this would have been a great shot, and probably in my portfolio.

Branching out

May 10, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

So I have decided to try and branch out with my photography and start to do more portrait type shooting.  Have a done a few shoots so far and am liking it more and more.  I have started out with modeling / swimsuit portraits.

I am going to start doing more and more portrait type shooting as well as family shooting once I feel more comfortable with how my shots look.

Here are a few of my favorites from my most recent model shoot at the Oceanside North Jetty.
