In the Water

September 18, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

I have been very fortunate in my first couple of years of surf photography to make friends with not only good people, but some other talented photographers.  Some of them in fact have been kind enough to send me some shots they have taken of me... So I thought I would share those pics as well as giving a little love to them and their websites / Facebook pages.

Thanks GUYS!!

It is ready!  I have finally narrowed down the images that I am going to use for the 2013 calendar and ordered my first batch from my supplier.

The calendar consists of 13 different images taken from the water in and around La Jolla. This years calendar highlights my first year of water photography.

Calendars are available for pre-order now.

Simply go to: http://surfingeye.com/2013calendar

You can order either a Wall calendar for $18 (plus tax and shipping) or a desk calendar for $13 (plus tax and shipping).

Here are a few of the images that are going to be used for this years calendar...Hope to see your orders soon...

**NOTE** I was originally going to have 15 month calendar (which some may have seen with my previous blog post), however my supplier couldn't accommodate me with this.  So it will be a standard 12 month calendar, with the first month being Jan '13.

iPhone Cases

September 06, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

One of the best things about being a photographer is being able to share something that you have captured.  It makes all the work and money you spent leading up to that picture worth it.

When someone actually wants to buy a print to hang it in their home so that they can look at it over and over again... Is such a great feeling as well.  But, when someone likes your pictures so much that they want to take it with them everywhere, every day...  Now that is just AWESOME!

A while ago, I released the ability to have my images put on iPhone and iPad cases.  The response has been great, and a few of the people who have purchased them have been kind enough to send me pictures of their cases...

Thanks Tom!

Thanks Brooke!

Thanks Jesse!  This one looks SICK!!

Here is one of the emails I received from someone who bought a case as well.

From Ashley:

"I have received it and LOVE it. I just started a new job as a high school teacher and having the ocean in my pocket is really calming... Furthermore, the case is durable, and the image quality is awesome. I've been a fan of your work for some time. You have a unique and remarkable gift. Keep it up, and rest assured I'm telling everyone where I got this case!"

I love getting emails like this...

I have created a gallery of images I think would look VERY cool on various iPhone and iPad cases.  You can check them out at:

However, any image can be purchased for one of these cases.

If you ever have any questions regarding these, you can always shoot me an email at: [email protected]

End of the Summer

Last weekend was the last of the summer of 2012.  And Mother Nature decided to send us out with a BANG!

A big South Swell hit southern California for labor day weekend and brought out nothing but great waves and sunshine with it.  While Orange County got pounded (Newport was hitting at 20 – 25 ft) San Diego still got a lot of good waves too.  I got out and did some wave and actual land shooting…

Here are some of what I got from this weekend:

The lens missed about three more feet of wave above this body surfer.

Know your break

August 28, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

While I have all the surf forecast apps on my iPhone and watch them closely when I know I am going to go to the beach…when shooting shore break, you can really never rely on that…

A lot of the good clear barrel shots that I have taken have been on days where the surf has not been that great...

Take Sunday night for instance…the surf was forecasted for 1-2 ft, but on shore, you had some that were breaking overhead.  Also, the more you know about your favorite shore break spots, the better you can predict regardless of the forecasters say.  Here are a few from last weekend where, as I said above, the forecast was 1-2ft with poor conditions.  Hope you enjoy!

The sun is calling

Last week I made a point to shoot more in the later points of the day.  The tide was high (which is good for my shore break) and La Jolla decided that it had enough of the marine layer, and gave SoCal some great sunsets...

While you can do the normal sunset on the horizon type shot, which I do.. I have chosen to try a few, little more unique type shots…

What do you think?

I was laying on some rocks for this shot and the power of the water coming at me actually made me cut my back and foot all up..

This one was a couple of shots before the one above, so you can see what kind of power there was..

Not all "sunset" type shots have to have a sunset in it..

Lighting is everything!

August 13, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Over the last couple of weeks, life has taken over and not allowed me to get to the beach.  Portrait shoots, actual work, sickness, and getting ready for my son’s arrival has taken a lot of my time.

With that said though, I was finally able to get to the beach this weekend and was rewarded.  The waves were decent (compared to what I have seen them at before) and the overcast skies that are normally over La Jolla were nonexistent.  People often ask me how I get the color I do on some of my waves shots.  And while I do play with some of the color levels in Lightroom, 95% of it is all about the times at which I shoot.  Take last night for instance.

I knew all day on Saturday that I was going to go and shoot on Sunday.  I decided to wait until sunset and go shoot.  And I am really glad I did.  There really was not a cloud on the western horizon and it gave the waves some GREAT coloring.  I took some of what I think are my favorite shots thus far.

Let me know what you think in the comments…

Under the Sea

August 03, 2012  •  2 Comments

While I have not been able to get out and shoot all that much the last couple of weeks…when I do, I have been working very hard on the underwater wave shots.

This is a very cool, mostly unseen perspective that 99% of people never see.  While I have spent a few weeks on trying to capture these underwater waves, I have found that this is EXSTREAMLY HARD to do.  You have to have nice clear skies, the right light and more importantly, good clear water, which is very difficult to find in SoCal sometimes… That being said…I remember saying the same thing to myself when I first start shooting empty waves from in the water.  Not only that, but when you get that ONE picture that everything comes together…the weeks and thousands of shots you had to take to get that one all fade away…

Here are a few that I would label “OK” as I delve into this.  Hope you enjoy!

This is probably my favorite shot from under the water, however the stupid sea grass wanted to get right in the way...

The pain of water photography

July 24, 2012  •  Leave a Comment

Last week was a very good week.  I was able to get in the water three times.  All three days the waves were good.  All three days the sun was out…and all three days I came away with hundreds of shots.

This is not to say though that each day was perfect though.  Since summer has finally hit La Jolla, and the water temp has been very tolerable (mid to upper 60’s), I have been going out in board shorts and 1.5mm top.  It has been fine except on Thursday and Saturday when I was out.

Let’s start on Thursday.  I did some water portraits and when I was done, I decided to just stay and get some waves as well.  With about an hour to go, I started feeling a lot of stinging and tingling up and down my exposed legs…I thought it was just irritation from some seaweed that got wrapped around me, but after showing them to the life guard, it turns out they were jellyfish stings…So I had that going for me…  I had to deal with that until about 9:30 that night….

When I went out on Saturday towards the end of my time in the water, I was trying to do some under water stuff and was not watching what I was doing…I ended up getting thrown by a wave…which is not out of the norm…however, when I landed, I landed right on my knee.  Also not a big deal, but it was at low tide and there were a lot of exposed sea shells on the ocean floor.  Thus, I cut my knee all to hell.  Luckily nothing got stuck in my knee for how hard I hit…

Moral of the story…Water photography hurts some time…but when you get back to your car and start looking through what you have just taken…all that pain goes away…  And you can’t wait to get back out there..

Here are a few that I came away with from last week…Hope you enjoy.
